UM-Dearborn Drops Opening Round Game Against Top-Seeded Southeastern

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. – The University of Michigan-Dearborn (30-12) softball team squared off against the top-seeded Southeastern University Fire (47-10) on Monday (May 16). SEU fought off an early UM-Dearborn attack to take the contest 8-2.

Inside the Game

Amber Cheplick got the UMD bats going early with a hard liner to left. Cheplick swiped second to get the Wolverines a runner in scoring position. The Wolverines would put runners on the corners for Lanie Ellinger after Aspen Starr reached on a throwing error. Ellinger poked a texas-leaguer into the outfield to score Cheplick, and Starr was called safe on an obstruction call to give the Wolverines a 2-0 lead.

Ellinger looked to add some insurance in the fourth as she ripped a double down the left-field line. However, the Wolverines could not manufacture the run and left Ellinger stranded.

The SEU bats came alive and scored eight unanswered runs in the final three innings to take the contest 8-2.

Ellinger got the start in the circle for the Wolverines, throwing 5.1 innings and surrendered four earned runs while punching out a pair of SEU batters.
