Wolverines Complete Sweep of Indiana Tech With Shutout Victory

FORT WAYNE, Ind. -- The University of Michigan-Dearborn women's ice hockey team picked up a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Indiana Tech on Sunday (Jan. 19) afternoon at the Canlan Ice Sports complex in Fort Wayne. Despite being heavily outshot, the Wolverines relied on a stellar performance from goalkeeper Kenna Borso and a late first-period goal to earn their third consecutive win and improve their record to 11-11-0 on the season.

The game became a defensive battle after a few early penalties on both sides. UM-Dearborn got on the scoreboard from Zoe Zaifman, with a feed from Charlise Wharram, beating Indiana Tech's goalie Ashtyn Barthiaume to put the Wolverines ahead 1-0. Despite multiple chances for Indiana Tech to respond—including a late first-period power play—they could not solve Borso.

The second period was a defensive showcase, as both teams had limited offensive chances. UM-Dearborn faced more penalties, but their penalty kill was impenetrable, keeping Indiana Tech off the board. The period ended without any goals, and UM-Dearborn clung to their 1-0 lead.

The third period saw a surge in shots from Indiana Tech as they pushed for the equalizer, outshooting the Wolverines 9-3 in the final frame. However, Borso remained sharp, making several key saves, including a couple of dazzling stops on close-range shots. Indiana Tech pulled Barthiaume in the final seconds for an extra attacker but could not find a way through.
