Wolverines Sweep Warriors in Opening Series

ROCHESTER, Mich. -- The University of Michigan-Dearborn men's ice hockey team concluded its first series on Wednesday (Sept. 18) night. The Wolverines took down the Rochester Christian Warriors 9-1, with seven different Wolverines scoring goals. UM-Dearborn outscored the Warriors 17-1 in the home-and-home series, bringing its record to 2-0-0. 

The Wolverines wasted no time tacking on two goals in quick succession. Dawson Nelson opened the scoring at the 15:41 mark when the blueliners Ryan Stanley and Josh Makarchuk cycled the puck into the Wolverine's zone. Stanley found Nelson with nobody around him, and Nelson finished the job for the 1-0 lead. Two minutes later, A.J. Benit scored his first of the season, giving the Wolverines a 2-0 advantage just six minutes in. The Warriors answered back on the powerplay at 9:44, but UM-Dearborn would find one more goal just seconds before the period ended as Craig McKague scored his first of two goals. 

The second period saw just one goal, which the Wolverines' special teams unit helped with. Benit scored the Wolverines' one powerplay goal in five chances, and Bailey Byrd and Jake Emery assisted on the goal. UM-Dearborn. The Wolverines finished their run of seven unanswered goals with a five-goal third period. Five different Wolverines scored, as Ryan Stanley, Ian Kimble, Joey Cibor, Craig McKague, and Max Hartwell all got in on the action. 

Drew Adams (2-0-0) recorded his second win as he made 17 saves in 18 chances. The Wolverines are back in action on Thursday (Oct. 3) as they take on Calvin University in Grand Rapids, Mich.
