FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich. – April 16, 2025 — The University of Michigan-Dearborn softball team continued its strong conference campaign with a pair of competitive games against WHAC rival Cornerstone University on Wednesday at Gary L. Bryce Field. Despite dropping both contests by narrow margins — 8-5 in Game One and 6-5 in Game Two — the Wolverines showed fight from the first pitch to the final out.
Game One: Cornerstone 8, UM-Dearborn 5
The Wolverines (12-13, 9-6 WHAC) opened the day with energy, using a two-run homer from Kendyl Gearhart in the second inning to take an early 2-0 lead. After falling behind 4-2, Brooklynn Jones provided a spark with a solo home run in the fourth, and a two-run rally in the sixth tied things up at 5-5.
Despite the momentum shift, Cornerstone (20-12, 6-6 WHAC) strung together timely hits in the seventh to plate three runs and seal the win. Gearhart finished the game with two hits, two RBIs, and two runs scored, while Lindsay Marlewitz added two hits of her own in a strong offensive showing. In the circle, Sydni Uhlenberg struck out three and allowed only three earned runs across 2.2 innings, while Zoe Peterson added three scoreless frames in relief.
Game Two: Cornerstone 6, UM-Dearborn 5
The nightcap was another nail-biter. The Wolverines again fought hard, taking a 3-1 lead in the third thanks to aggressive base running and a two-run single by Jones. After Cornerstone responded with a three-run fourth, UM-Dearborn entered the final inning trailing 6-3.
In the bottom of the seventh, the Wolverines mounted a rally. Olivia Scott and Claire Muehlbrandt reached base and scored on another clutch hit from Jones, who finished the game with two more RBIs, cutting the deficit to one. But the rally came up just short as Cornerstone held on.
Scott led the way at the top of the order, going 2-for-3 with two runs scored, while Marlewitz, Gearhart, and Muehlbrandt each contributed key hits in the effort. Pitcher Hannah Koch gave the Wolverines a solid start over 4.2 innings.
