BYRON CENTER, Mich. -- In an impressive display of offense and teamwork, the University of Michigan-Dearborn men's ice hockey team dominated Aquinas College with a decisive 5-1 victory on Saturday (Jan. 18) in Byron Center, Michigan. The Wolverines showcased their strength, moving to an overall record of 13-13-0 and improving their conference record to 11-6-0.
The game kicked off strongly for UM-Dearborn, with Connor Hasse scoring the first goal at 17:13 of the opening period, unassisted, setting the tone for the match. As the period ended, the Wolverines held a 2-0 lead thanks to an early power-play goal from Max Hartwell just 1:41 into the second period, assisted by Bailey Byrd and Trevor Heslop.
UM-Dearborn continued to assert their dominance in the second period, with Will Barrett extending the lead to 3-0 at 3:20, off an assist from Carter Allen. Shortly after, at 9:07, Carter Allen netted another power-play goal, making it 4-0 with assists from Ethan Marcola and Hartwell.
Aquinas managed to break through the Wolverines' strong defense early in the third period. Arseniy Malyutin scored at 0:56, with support from Gavin Rozema and Brendan Bourne, reducing the deficit to 4-1. However, Michigan-Dearborn responded with one last goal from Matt Cunningham at 16:12, assisted by Jake Emery and Connor Hasse, closing out the scoring at 5-1.
The Wolverines outshot Aquinas 43-36, demonstrating their offensive prowess, while Trevor Heslop stood firm in the net, making 35 saves to claim victory.
