DEARBORN, Mich. – The University of Michigan-Dearborn men's basketball team fought back late in the second half against Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference rival Cornerstone University, but last-second shots would not fall for the Wolverines Saturday at the UM-Dearborn Fieldhouse.
Down 10 with eight minutes to play, UM-Dearborn (RV) chipped away and after a Jason Gigliotti layup with nine seconds to go, the Wolverines were down one point. Jalen Paul stole the ensuing inbound and got the ball to Jared Jackson, but a layup would not go, nor would the follow from Gigliotti, as the Golden Eagles escaped with a 65-64 win.
The loss is the fifth straight for the Wolverines, who fall to 13-9 overall and 6-6 in the WHAC.
UM-Dearborn led 36-32 at the break, but Cornerstone found its mark from deep early in the second half to build a double-digit lead. The UM-Dearborn defense tightened setting up the late rally for the Wolverines.
Mathew Mignault led the Wolverines with 14 of his 16 points in the first half, as he converted on four 3-pointers. Damian Forrest finished with 11 points, while Cody Kegley added 10. Gigliotti narrowly missed a double-double with nine points and 10 rebounds.
The Wolverines shot 18-of-50 from the field, 7-of-21 from deep and a near-perfect 21-of-22 at the line.
Cornerstone was led by 13 points each from Tyler Baker and Gabe Meriwether.
The Wolverines look to get back on track against Rochester University in WHAC matchup at 7:30 pm Wednesday at the UM-Dearborn Fieldhouse.
