Defense pushes UM-Dearborn to WHAC opening win

DEARBORN, Mich. – The University of Michigan-Dearborn men's basketball team opened the 2019-20 Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference season with a 15-point win over Aquinas College Wednesday at the UM-Dearborn Fieldhouse.

The Wolverines held the Saints to just 13 made field goals and 1-of-20 from 3-point range in a 52-37 win. The victory snaps a two-game skid and pushes UM-Dearborn to 7-2 overall and 1-0 in the WHAC.

With the game still in doubt late in the second half, Cody Kegley orchestrated an 8-0 run which included two and-one acrobatic layups to push UM-Dearborn to the win. Kegley finished with a game-high 14 points on 5-of-12 shooting while adding seven rebounds, four assists, and two steals.

Zach Lattimer finished with nine points, all on three 3-pointers, while Jalen Paul filled the stat sheet with five points, six rebounds, five assists, and five steals.

The Wolverines shot 18-of-55 from the field, 9-of-22 from deep and 7-of-14 from the line, while outrebounding Aquinas 36-30.

The Saints were led by Justin Lary with 10 points.

UM-Dearborn continues WHAC play against Rochester University at 3 pm Saturday in Rochester Hills, Mich.
