Groat, Saunders take weekly WHAC honors

DEARBORN, Mich. – The No. 2 University of Michigan-Dearborn men's ice hockey team swept the weekly Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference awards after splitting a series with No. 9 Davenport University over the weekend in Grand Rapids, Mich.

Senior Tyler Groat earned his first WHAC Offensive Player of the Week award while fellow senior Troy Saunders won the WHAC Defensive Player of the Week for the first time, it was announced by the conference on Monday.

Groat finished the weekend with two goals and an assist, including the game-winning goal during Saturday's comeback win. His goal on Friday was the 100th of his career with the Wolverines.

Saunders from Canton, Mich., has put together a strong season on the blue line for the Wolverines. His eight points rank second among UM-Dearborn defensemen. Saunders recorded an assist on the game-winning goal on Saturday.

Groat, Saunders and the Wolverines return to action after the new year, hosting Western Michigan University at 7 pm on Friday, Jan. 11, 2019 at the UM-Dearborn Ice Arena.
