Groat scores four, No. 2 Wolverines win 8-1

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The No. 2 University of Michigan-Dearborn men's hockey team defeated Eastern Michigan University in the first of a two-game series on Thursday at the Ann Arbor Ice Cube.

The Eagles opened the scoring in the first period before the Wolverines recorded eight unanswered goals to defeat EMU 8-1, improving to 15-2-1 on the season. The Wolverines have won four straight games. 

Trailing 1-0, senior Tyler Groat, the reigning Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference Player of the Week, scored the next two goals to give UM-Dearborn a 2-1 lead early in the second. The Wolverines continued to find success on offense as Justin Dunn, Andrew Spiegel, and Michael Hodgson added goals in the middle period.

The Wolverines scored three more, including two from Groat, in the third to put the game away.

Groat led the way offensively with four goals. Billy Brock added one goal and four assists to continue to lead the Wolverines in points, while Spiegel finished with a goal and two assists. Kevin Bechard and Troy Saunders recorded two assists each.

Thomas Proudlock earned his 14th victory of the season, stopping 28 shots.

The Wolverines return to action against Eastern Michigan University at 7 pm Friday at the UM-Dearborn Ice Arena.
