Wolverines advance with 6-1 win over Sooners

FRISCO, Texas – The No. 2 University of Michigan-Dearborn men's ice hockey team opened the 2019 American Collegiate Hockey Association Division I National Tournament with a convincing win in the round of 16 Friday at the Comerica Center in Frisco, Texas.

After No. 15 Oklahoma University tied the game at 1-1 early in the second period, the Wolverines scored five unanswered to advance to the national quarterfinals with a 6-1 victory. The win moves UM-Dearborn 29-3-1 overall this season.

The Wolverines play the winner of No. 7 Davenport University and No. 10 the University of Central Oklahoma at 5 pm (CDT) Sunday at the Comerica Center. DU and UCO face off in the round of 16 at 5 pm (CDT) on Saturday.

Michael Hodgson got the scoring started for the Wolverines in the first period with a goal midway through the frame. After OU got on the board early in the second, UM-Dearborn's Andrew Spiegel picked up a loose puck in the right circle and fired a wrist shot through the Sooner goaltender's legs to put UM-Dearborn back on top 2-1.

Tyler Groat scored his first goal of the night on a power play later in the second to give UM-Dearborn a two-goal lead after 40 minutes. Groat and Hodgson each added their second of the night in the third, while Sterling Cooper got on the board with a short-angle deflection on a shot from John Ames.

Thomas Proudlock got the start in net and earned the win for the Wolverines. Complete stats will be posted when available.
