Wolverines earn sweep of Eagles with 9-0 win

DEARBORN, Mich. – The University of Michigan-Dearborn men's hockey team completed a series sweep over Eastern Michigan University Friday at the UM-Dearborn Ice Arena.

The Wolverines used a five-goal second period to pull away for a 9-0 victory, improving to 16-2-1 on the season and stretching the team's win streak to five.

For the second night in a row, Tyler Groat netted a hat trick, opening the scoring with an unassisted goal. Justin Dunn scored to give the Wolverines a 2-0 lead through 20 minutes.

UM-Dearborn started the second period with a shorthanded goal, as Groat's second of the game made it 3-0. Kevin Bechard scored the next two goals to chase EMU goalie Kevin O'Shea.

The Wolverines added two more before the intermission and scored two in the third to complete the sweep.

Leading the way offensively was Groat with three goals, pushing his series total to seven. Bechard scored two goals and added two assists, while Andrew Spiegel added three assists. Dunn recorded one goal and two helpers.

Thomas Proudlock made 17 saves in the shutout win. The junior improves to 15-2-1 on the season.

The Wolverines return to action against Calvin College at 7 pm Friday at the UM-Dearborn Ice Arena.
