No. 11 Wolverines top Aquinas in WHAC contest

BYRON CENTER, Mich. – In a rematch of the 2017-18 Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference Tournament title game, the No. 11 University of Michigan-Dearborn men's hockey team traveled to Aquinas College Saturday in Grand Rapids, Mich.

Up 3-2 late in the second period, the Wolverines took complete control, scoring three goals in the last 20:08 of regulation to defeat the Saints 6-3. UM-Dearborn improves to 4-1-0 on the season and 2-1-0 in the WHAC.

In the first period, Joseph Crump got the scoring started on assists from Sean McLaren and Tyler Dalton. After the Saints tied it up, Tyler Groat added his team-leading fourth of the season. Groat now has 96 career goals for the Wolverines.

Andrew Spiegel recorded his first of two goals on the night from Michael Hodgson and Henry Laukkanen early in the second. With just eight seconds left in the second, Justin Dunn recorded his first goal of the year, the eventual game-winner, to give the Wolverines a 4-2 lead heading into the third. UM-Dearborn would score two more goals in the final period to put the game out of reach.

Leading the way offensively for the Wolverines was Andrew Spiegel with two goals. Groat and Dunn each pitched in with a goal and an assist, while Kevin Bechard scored late in the third to tie Groat with a team-high four goals on the season.

Jordan Gilbert made his first start of the season for the Wolverines, stopping 13 shots to earn the victory.

The Wolverines return to action next weekend as they host Illinois State University in a back-to-back starting at 7 pm Friday at the UM-Dearborn Ice Arena in Dearborn, Mich.
