Special Teams Lead Wolverines to Win

SOUTHFIELD, Mich. – The University of Michigan-Dearborn men's ice hockey team continued its win streak, picking up an 11th straight victory, topping Lawrence Tech in the opener of a home-and-home Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference series Friday in Southfield, Mich.

The No. 2 Wolverine found themselves in a tight contest heading to the third with a two-goal advantage, but UM-Dearborn scored three in the final 20 minutes to cruise to a 6-2 victory.

The win pushes UM-Dearborn to 22-2-1 overall and 6-1-0 in the WHAC.

Tyler Groat got the Wolverines going in the first with a shorthanded goal on an assist from Sean McLaren. After LTU tied the game before the first intermission, UM-Dearborn scored two unanswered in the second, including a power-play tally from Andrew Spiegel and a shorthanded goal from Tyler Dalton.

LTU cut the deficit to 3-2 early in the third, but a second goal from Groat, this one on the power play put UM-Dearborn up by two with 12 to play. Kevin Bechard and Dalton added insurance goals to secure the win.

Groat and Dalton each finished with two goals, while Spiegel added a goal and two assists. John Barlow, Justin Dunn, and Michael Hodgson each recorded two assists.

Thomas Proudlock picked up the win in the net with 15 saves for the Wolverines.

The series concludes for UM-Dearborn and LTU at 7 pm on Saturday at the UM-Dearborn Ice Arena.
