Groat scores two as No. 2 UM-Dearborn completes sweep

DEARBORN, Mich. – The University of Michigan-Dearborn men's ice hockey team moved into a tie for first place in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference standings with a win over Lawrence Tech to sweep a weekend series Saturday at the UM-Dearborn Fieldhouse.

The No. 2 Wolverines secured the win in a tight game with a late goal from Tyler Groat to secure a 3-1 win, improving to 22-2-1 overall and 7-1-0 in the WHAC heading into the final two weeks of the regular season.

The Wolverines are in a three-way tie with Indiana Tech and Aquinas College atop the WHAC standings, but UM-Dearborn has a game in hand with the regular season reaching its conclusion.

After drawing a penalty on Blue Devils forward Bryce Ebert early on in the first period, Michael Hodgson scored to give the Wolverines the early 1-0 lead. UM-Dearborn added another goal late in the first from Groat.

The Blue Devils kept the game close the rest of the way, adding a power-play goal of their own in the second to make it 2-1 after two. Groat's goal late in the third put the win away for the Wolverines.

In net, Thomas Proudlock made 11 saves in 40 minutes for the Wolverines. The starter, Jordan Gilbert, made three saves in the first period to earn the decision and improve to 3-0 on the season.

Tyler Dalton recorded two assists after scoring two goals last night.

The Wolverines continue WHAC play against Rochester College at 7 pm Friday at the UM-Dearborn Ice Arena.
