No. 2 Wolverines close regular season with 16th straight win

TOLEDO, Ohio – The University of Michigan-Dearborn men's hockey team concluded its regular season with a 16th straight victory earning a sweep over the University of Toledo Saturday at the Team Toledo Ice House.

The Wolverines scored twice in the first period and led the rest of the way, defeating the Rockets 5-3 and to finish the regular season with a 27-2-1 record overall.

After the teams were held scoreless for 19 minutes, the Wolverines scored twice in the last minute of the first to take a 2-0 lead. John Ames and Tyler Groat put UM-Dearborn up 2-0, scoring just eight seconds apart.

The teams traded goals the rest of the way, with each scoring two in the second and one in the third. Leading the way offensively for the Wolverines was Groat with two goals and an assist. The senior leads UM-Dearborn with 40 goals, scoring in 19 of his last 20 games. Billy Brock added three assists, while Justin Dunn finished with a goal and an assist.

Thomas Proudlock earned his 24th victory of the season, making 24 saves, as the Wolverines outshot Toledo 37-27.

UM-Dearborn will host the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference tournament scheduled for Mar. 8-10 at the UM-Dearborn Ice Arena.

The Wolverines will be the No. 1 seed in the tournament after winning the regular season title. UM-Dearborn will play the winner of No. 4 seed Lawrence Tech and No. 5 seed Concordia in the first semifinal game at 3 pm Saturday, March 9.
