Wolverines earn tie, fall in shootout to Adrian

DEARBORN, Mich. – The University of Michigan-Dearborn men's ice hockey team came away with a tie against Adrian College in a matchup of two of the top teams in the ACHA Saturday at the UM-Dearborn Ice Arena.

The No. 2 Wolverines took a one-goal lead twice, but the No. 3 Bulldogs answered quickly both times. A furious overtime period did not produce a winning goal, sending the contest to a shootout with Adrian winning 3-2.

The game goes into the books as a tie for the Wolverines moving their record to 11-1-1 overall.

Andrew Spiegel got the scoring started early in the first period as a dump in from Dawson Richard took a favorable bounce off the glass. The puck landed on Spiegel's stick in the slot and he fired it past Adrian goaltender Michael Barrett. The Bulldogs tied the score late in the first to send the game to the break tied at one.

Tyler Groat scored the 99th goal of his career on a sharp angle wrist shot midway through the second to put the Wolverines up 2-1, but Adrian tied the score less than a minute later.

The two goalies controlled the rest of regulation and the overtime period, trading big saves. Thomas Proudlock stopped 37 shots for the Wolverines, while Barrett made 41 saves for the Bulldogs.

UM-Dearborn plays its final series before the holiday break with two games at Davenport University starting at 5:35 pm Friday at Patterson Ice Arena in Grand Rapids, Mich.
