No. 5 Wolverines take opener with Saints 6-1

DEARBORN, Mich. – The University of Michigan-Dearborn men's ice hockey team returned to action hosting Aquinas College in a Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference matchup Friday at the UM-Dearborn Ice Arena.

The No. 5 Wolverines took the opener of the home-and-home weekend series by a score of 6-1. The win improves UM-Dearborn's record to 5-1-1 overall and 4-1-0 in the WHAC.

The Wolverines took control early when Dawson Richard found the back of the net just under two minutes into the game with the assists to John Ames and Adam Groat. Richard added another goal on the power play from Justin Dunn and Mathieu LaForest with six minutes left as UM-Dearborn closed out the first period up 2-0.

At the 15-minute mark of the second, Michael Hodgson added to the Wolverines lead by capitalizing on a penalty shot. Aquinas cut the lead back to two goals by answering 30 seconds later, but Jared Lee scored from Dunn and Nic LaBurn to put UM-Dearborn up 4-1 at the end of the second.

The Wolverines added two more goals in third from Anthony Davis and Dunn to close out the scoring. For Davis, it was the first of his career coming just 23 seconds into the third with the assist coming from Billy Brock. LaBurn and Dakota Potter had the assists on the goal by Dunn.

Thomas Proudlock continued his strong play in goal for the Wolverines, making 36 saves.

UM-Dearborn returns to action against Aquinas at 7:30 pm Saturday in Grand Rapids, Mich.
