Penn, Williams go for 20 points as UM-Dearborn wins

LIVONIA, Mich. - The University of Michigan-Dearborn men's basketball team snapped a two-game skid as four players hit double figures in a win over Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference rival Madonna University Saturday in Livonia, Mich.

The Wolverines built a 14-point lead at the 10-minute mark of the first half, and led by seven at the break. The Cruasders did not back down in the second half, trimming the Wolverine lead to just two early in the second half and to four points in the final minute. UM-Dearborn hit enough shots down the stretch to emerge with the 79-71 win. The win moves UM-Dearborn to 18-10 overall and 12-8 in the WHAC.

UM-Dearborn remains in a three-way tie for fourth place with the University of Northwestern Ohio and Aquinas College. The Wolverines host both teams next week to close out the regular season. The top four teams in the WHAC host in the first round of the conference playoffs.

UM-Dearborn was led by Marcus Williams (SR/Lagos, Nigeria) from the outside and Jason Penn (JR/Detroit, MI) on the inside. Williams hit four 3-pointers and was 8-of-11 from the field in the win, while Penn was 9-of-15 from the field. Both players added six rebounds and three steals.

Xavier Crofford (SO/Detroit, MI) added 10 points and five rebounds, while Cody Kegley (FR/Yale, MI) came off the bench to hit a pair of 3-pointers, finishing with 10 points. Kegley dished out a team-high four assists.

The Wolverines shot 31-of-66 from the field, 10-of-27 from deep and 7-of-11 at the line. The Wolverines added 15 assists to just nine turnovers, but lost the rebounding battle 49-34.

Five Crusaders finished in double figures led by Austin Johnson with 19 points, while Chris Dierker added 15 points and 16 rebounds.

The Wolverines close the 2016-17 regular season with two home games starting with the University of Northwestern Ohio at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the UM-Dearborn Fieldhouse.
