Second half surge sends Pride past Wolverines

HAMMOND, Ind. - Purdue University-Northwest pulled away in the second half from the University of Michigan-Dearborn men's basketball team in a nonconference matchup Friday in Hammond, Ind.

The Wolverines trailed by just two at the break, but PNW controlled the pace of play in the final 20 mintues to take an 82-67 win, dropping U-Dearborn to 0-2 on the season.

The Wolverines were led by Jason Penn (JR/Detroit, MI) with 19 points on 8-of-12 shooting. Penn grabbed 10 rebounds for a double-double, while adding three blocks on the defensive end. Freshman Cody Kegley (FR/Yale, MI) scored 11 points, hitting three 3-pointers and adding six rebounds. Xavier Crofford (SO/Detroit, MI) and Marcus Williams (SR/Lagos, Nigeria) each finsihed with nine points, while Ashton Curd (JR/Detroit, MI) added eight.

The Wolverines shot 27-of-58 from the field, 6-of-20 from deep and 7-of-16 from the free-throw line. The Pride won the rebounding battle 36-34, while UM-Dearborn finished with 11 assists and 18 turnovers.

PNW was led by Max Clifford and Torrance Johnson, both scoring 18 points, while Chandler Spring added 17.

The Wolverines continue play in Hammond with a matchup against Holy Cross College at 5 p.m. Saturday.
