DEARBORN, Mich. - The nation's top team received all it could handle from University of Michigan-Dearborn men's basketball in a Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference clash Wednesday at the UM-Dearborn Fieldhouse.

No. 1 Cornerstone University found its way into a back-and-forth affair with the Wolverines, which saw the home team erase an 11-point deficit to lead late. The Golden Eagles showed their championship mettle, holding off UM-Dearborn 75-72. The loss drops the Wolverines to 11-7 overall and 5-5 in the WHAC.

UM-Dearborn got off to a great start, opening the game on a 10-0 run, which included a pair of 3-pointers. The Golden Eagles quickly asserted themselves, answering with a 24-4 run to build a double-digit lead. A late push from the Wolverines got the deficit down to six at the break. UM-Dearborn chipped away and tied the game at 50-50 with 12 minutes to go, setting up a great finish.

The Wolverines built a four-point lead, their largest of the second half, after two made free throws from Jason Penn (JR/Detroit, MI) with 8:11 to go. Cornerstone regained the advantage by three with a 3-pointer from Cory Cox. UM-Dearborn made a late push, but a last second 3-pointer from Cody Kegley (FR/Yale, MI) missed the mark.

Penn continued his dominant play as of late, scoring 25 points on 11-of-17 shooting, while adding seven rebounds and five assists. Marcus Williams (SR/Lagos, Nigeria) scored 17 points, including three 3-pointers. He added six rebounds and four assists, while Ashton Curd (JR/Detroit, MI) came off the bench to chip in 11 points and four assists.

The Wolverines shot 30-of-58 from the field, 7-of-19 from 3-point range and 5-of-10 from the free-throw line.

Kyle Steigenga led Cornerstone with 21 points, while Sam Vander Sluis recorded a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds. The Golden Eagles shot 25-of-66 from the field, 5-of-15 from deep and 18-of-25 from the line, while outrebounding the Wolverines 35-22.

UM-Dearborn looks to rebound against Madonna University at 3 p.m. Saturday at the UM-Dearborn Fieldhouse.
