Wolverines drop conference game to Marygrove

DEARBORN, Mich - The University of Michigan-Dearborn men's basketball team rallied late, but could not avoid an upset at the hands of the Marygrove College Mustangs in a Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference matchup Saturday at the UM-Dearborn Fieldhouse.

With the Wolverines holding a three-point lead at half-time, Marygrove took control early in the second half and held on late for an 84-76 win. The loss dropped the Wolverines to 17-9 overall and 11-7 in the WHAC.

The Wolverines found themselves down by four with 58 seconds remaining in the game until Jeff Cain (SR/Lansing, MI ) was fouled and made both of his shots from the line. The following play, a foul from Ashton Curd (JR/Detroit, MI) sent the Mustangs to the line who converted on one attempt to gain a three-point lead. A 3-point attempt from Marcus Williams (SR/Lagos, Nigeria) late missed the mark for the Wolverines.

UM-Dearborn was led by Xavier Crofford (SO/Detroit, MI). He shot 6-for-9 from the field, made 4-of-6 shots from the line and recorded 17 points, while adding eight rebounds. Jason Penn (JR/Detroit, MI) added 14 points and six rebounds, while Williams scored 12 and grabbed eight boards. Ashton Curd came off the bench to score 10 points.

The Wolverines shot 24-of-62 from the field, 24-of-37 at the line and made 4-of-26 shots from long range.

Marygrove was led offensively by Eli Ingram's 16 points. The Mustangs shot 32-of-74 from the field, 7-of-23 form deep and 13-of-22 from the line.

The Wolverines travel to No. 1 Cornerstone University for a WHAC matchup at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in Grand Rapids, Mich.
