Wolverines close regular season with win over Aquinas

DEARBORN, Mich. - With the first Wolverine-Athletic Conference postseason tournament game since 2010-11 on deck, the University of Michigan-Dearborn men's basketball team held on for a win over Aquinas College in the 2016-17 regular season finale on Senior Day Saturday at the UM-Dearborn Fieldhouse.

In the final regular season game at the Fieldhouse for two Wolverine seniors, UM-Dearborn outscored the Saints by seven in the second half, hitting enough big shots down the stretch to pick up a 75-70 win. The Wolverines close the regular season 19-11 overall and 13-9 in the WHAC. UM-Dearborn enters the WHAC postseason tournament as the No. 5 seed and will travel to the University of Northwestern Ohio for the first round on Thursday.

In a ceremony prior to tip off, the Wolverines honored seniors Marcus Williams (SR/Lagos, Nigeria) and Jeff Cain (SR/Lansing, MI ) as a part of Senior Day.

The Wolverines controlled the paint, led by Jason Penn (JR/Detroit, MI) with 22 points on 9-of-15 shooting, while adding 13 rebounds for a double-double. In what may have been his final game at the Fieldhouse, Williams scored 17 points, including three 3-pointers, while grabbing seven rebounds. Xavier Crofford (SO/Detroit, MI) added 10 points, while Cain scored eight points in his Senior-Day performance for the Wolverines.

The Wolverines shot 26-of-48 from the field, 7-of-23 from deep and 16-of-22 from the line, while outrebounding the Saints 39-24.

Jake Bullock led the Saints with 20 points and six rebounds. Aquinas finished 27-of-61 from the field, 4-of-18 from behind the 3-point line and 12-of-20 on free throws.

For the second time in just over a week, the Wolverines will square off with UNOH, as UM-Dearborn takes on the Racers Thursday in Lima, Ohio.
