Slow start too much to overcome for UM-Dearborn men

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Siena Heights University led from the opening whistle against the University of Michigan-Dearborn men's basketball team (RV), as the Saints jumped out to a 10-0 lead and held off a furious rally late by the Wolverines in a Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference matchup played at Crisler Center in Ann Arbor, Mich.

The Wolverines cut what was a 19-point-Saint lead to three on two occasions in the second half, including with under three minutes to play. SHU took advantage with a late 7-0 run to secure the win, dropping UM-Dearborn to 7-5 overall and 2-3 in the WHAC.

After settling down in the first half, the Wolverines found success in the paint through the effort of Jason Penn (JR/Detroit, MI). He finished with a game-high 17 points on 7-of-9 shooting, while adding five rebounds. Marcus Williams (SR/Lagos, Nigeria) added 13 points and a game-high nine rebounds. Xavier Crofford (SO/Detroit, MI) chipped in with nine points, five rebounds and three steals.

The Wolverines shot 23-of-52 from the field, 3-of-13 from deep and 9-of-14 from the free-throw line. UM-Dearborn was outrebounded 32-28, while finishing with 10 assists and 20 turnovers.

All five starters for SHU scored in double figures, led by Chris Pearl and Jerrell Martin, each with 15 points. The Saints shot 24-of-56 from the field, 5-of-15 from behind the 3-point line and 12-of-15 from the line.

The Wolverines look to get back on the winning track in the first of three-straight road WHAC games against Lawrence Tech University at 8 p.m. Wednesday in Southfield, Mich.
