Wolverines get first win, top Holy Cross 81-55

HAMMOND, Ind. - The University of Michigan-Dearborn men's basketball team rebounded from two losses to open the season with a convincing victory over Holy Cross College Saturday in Hammond, Ind.

The Wolverines rolled early, taking a 44-19 lead into the half and cruising to an 81-55 win to improve to 1-2 this season.

Four UM-Dearborn players finished in double figures, led by senior Marcus Williams (SR/Lagos, Nigeria), who scored 17 of his game-high 19 points in the first half. Williams shot 7-of-10 from the field and 3-of-8 from deep, while adding five rebounds and two blocks.

Ashton Curd (JR/Detroit, MI) came off the bench to score 11 points on 5-of-9 shooting, while Alex Hagel (SO/Macomb, MI) added 11 points and five rebounds. Jason Penn (JR/Detroit, MI) posted 10 points on a perfect 5-for-5 shooting performance. Penn added a team-high six rebounds and three blocks.

The Wolverines shot 30-of-62 from the field and 12-of-27 from deep, while hitting 9-of-12 free throws. UM-Dearborn won the rebounding battle 35-33, as the team finished with 11 steals, six blocks, 17 assists and 11 turnovers.

Bryce Crosen led Holy Cross with 16 points and Robby Jimenez added 10. Holy Cross finished shooting 21-of-50 from the field and 3-of-13 from behind the 3-point line. The Saints had just nine assists, compared to 22 turnovers.

UM-Dearborn opens the home portion of the schedule against the University of Akron Wayne College at 6 p.m. Thursday at the Fieldhouse.
