Wolverines upend No. 20 Warriors in WHAC win

DEARBORN, Mich. - For the second time in less than a week, the University of Michigan-Dearborn men's basketball team toppled a ranked Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference opponent, as the Wolverines defeated No. 20 Indiana Tech Tuesday at the UM-Dearborn Fieldhouse.

The Wolverines overcame a 10-point halftime deficit and did not give the lead back for the final 10 minutes of play. UM-Dearborn made just enough big plays down the stretch to hang on for a 66-62 win to move to 6-3 overall and 2-1 in the WHAC.

Indiana Tech led 42-32 at the break, but the Wolverines opened the second half on an 11-2 run to cut the gap to one. A dunk from Jason Penn (JR/Detroit, MI) gave the Wolverines their first lead of the second half with 10 minutes to play and the Warriors never regained the advantage. UM-Dearborn struggled with free throws down the stretch but hustle plays on both ends of the court kept the Wolverines in front until the final horn. Jeff Cain (SR/Lansing, MI ) finished off the victory with a pair of free throws with eight seconds to go.

Four Wolverine starters finished in double figures led by Marcus Williams (SR/Lagos, Nigeria) with 18 points on 6-of-12 shooting, including four 3-pointers. Alex Hagel (SO/Macomb, MI) scored 14 points, while Penn finished with a double-double, scoring 11 and grabbing 11 rebounds. Xavier Crofford (SO/Detroit, MI) filled the stat sheet with 10 points, seven rebounds and a team-high four assists.

The Wolverines shot 24-of-53 from the field, 7-of-20 from deep and 11-of-23 from the free-throw line. UM-Dearborn won the rebounding battle 35-32, while finishing with 17 assists and 11 turnovers.

C.J. Bussey led the Warriors with 17 points and six rebounds off the bench, while Miles Robinson and Lavonte Davis each added 13 points. Indiana Tech shot 23-of-63 from the field, 7-of-27 from behind the 3-point line and 9-of-14 on free throws.

UM-Dearborn steps out of conference play to take on Indiana University-Kokomo at 3 p.m. Saturday in Kokomo, Ind.
