Strong start not enough against No. 19 SHU

DEARBORN, Mich. – The University of Michigan-Dearborn women's basketball team got off to a hot start against No. 19 Siena Heights University, but the Wolverines were unable to hang on in a Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference contest Saturday at the UM-Dearborn Fieldhouse.

The Wolverines jumped out to a 20-12 lead late in the first quarter, but SHU answered and took a narrow 35-32 lead at the break. The Saints opened the third on a 9-2 run and outscored UM-Dearborn 23-14 in the frame to take control, earning a 76-69 win.

The loss drops UM-Dearborn to 10-7 overall and 3-4 in the WHAC.

UM-Dearborn was able to get going from the outside, hitting 13 shots from long range as a team, including six from Sade Lemons. The UM-Dearborn bench was held scoreless and SHU outrebounded the Wolverines 50-28.

Ro'Zhane Wells led the Wolverines with 22 points on 8-of-12 shooting, adding nine assists and five rebounds. Lemons finished with 20 points, going 6-of-9 from deep, while Cydney Williams added 13 points, four 3-pointers, and nine rebounds.

The Wolverines shot 24-of-67 from the field, 13-of-37 from deep and 8-of-12 at the line.

The Saints were led by Peyton Banks with 25 points and 12 rebounds, while Kelsey Wyman added 21 points and five 3-pointers off the bench.

UM-Dearborn remains home to host Madonna University at 5:30 pm Wednesday at the UM-Dearborn Fieldhouse.
