DEARBORN, Mich. – The University of Michigan-Dearborn women's basketball team used stifling defense to earn a Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference win over Madonna University Saturday at the UM-Dearborn Fieldhouse.
The Wolverines, blocked 10 shots, one shy of the WHAC single-game record, while holding Madonna to 28 percent shooting from the field in a 67-46 win. The victory pushes UM-Dearborn to 22-5 overall and 14-4 in the WHAC.
The Wolverines are in third place in the WHAC standings with two games left on the conference schedule. UM-Dearborn is a half-game behind Aquinas College for second place and two games back from Indiana Tech for the top spot.
The Wolverines have a matchup against Lawrence Tech on Monday before hosting Aquinas on Senior Day in one week, with a nonconference game against Wilberforce University on Wednesday in between. All remaining games in the regular season are at home for the Wolverines.
UM-Dearborn controls its own destiny to get to second place in the WHAC. If the Wolverines win out, they will secure home court through the first two rounds of the WHAC Postseason Tournament.
UM-Dearborn controlled the paint on defense in the win over the Crusaders Cydney Williams led the way with four blocks, while Ro'Zhane Wells, Sade Lemons and Jenna Rogers each added two. The Wolverines also won the rebounding battle 40-31.
Wells led the offense with 12 points, while Jeorgia Jones narrowly missed a double-double with 11 points and nine rebounds. Laekyn Jaciuk added 10 points, while Micah White recorded a team-high 10 rebounds off the bench.
The Wolverines shot 27-of-69 from the field, 7-of-24 from deep and 6-of-9 at the line.
Sydney Brown led Madonna with 11 points, while Cierra Von zittwitz added 10.
The Wolverines are set for a matchup with Lawrence Tech at 5:30 pm Monday at the UM-Dearborn Fieldhouse. The game was rescheduled from January 30.
