Jones named WHAC Player of the Week

DEARBORN, Mich. – The University of Michigan-Dearborn women's basketball picked up two nonconference wins last week, topping Olivet College on the road Thursday before rolling past Bethel College at home on Saturday.

The No. 22 Wolverines are off to their best start since joining the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference, holding a 14-2 record overall and are 6-1 in the league heading into 2019.

Jeorgia Jones led the Wolverines last week and for her efforts was named the WHAC Women's Basketball Player of the Week, it was announced by the league on Monday. The honor is the first for Jones and the second for a UM-Dearborn student-athlete this season (Sade Lemons, Nov. 19, 2018).

Jones, a native of Detroit, played just 16 minutes in a one-sided 85-53 win over Olivet. She led the Wolverines with 18 points on 8-of-12 shooting while adding 11 rebounds for a double-double. In a 79-50 victory over Bethel, Jones scored 14 points, adding five rebounds, two steals, and two blocks, as the UM-Dearborn defense overwhelmed the Pilots.

Jones is currently second on the team in scoring with 11.3 points per game and has finished in double figures in eight of her last nine outings. She is also second in rebounds for UM-Dearborn with 5.9 per game. Jones is shooting 49.7 percent from the field to lead the team.

UM-Dearborn returns to WHAC play against Madonna University at 5:30 pm Wednesday in Livonia, Mich.
