Comeback Falls Short for Women's Basketball

Dearborn, MI - It was a tale of two different halves Wednesday night when the women's basketball team hosted the Lourdes University Gray Wolves. In the first half, turnovers proved costly for the Wolverines. Michigan-Dearborn (1-21, 1-14) committed 16 turnovers and fell behind by 16 points at halftime. Lourdes (6-16, 3-12) converted those turnovers into points shooting 48% in the first half while holding the Wolverines to just 26% shooting.

In the third quarter, Lourdes extended the lead to 18 points, and then Michigan-Dearborn scored the final six points of the quarter to trim the lead to 12 points heading into the fourth quarter. The Wolverines slowly chipped away at the lead, and sophomore Oliva Hauser cut the lead to six points with just under four minutes to play. Freshman Natalie Spala made two free throws with 46 seconds left to pull Michigan-Dearborn within three points. After Lourdes sank two free throws, the two teams exchanged turnovers which led to freshman Jenna Rogers getting fouled with seven seconds left. Rogers sank both free throws cutting the Gray Wolves lead to three points. Michigan-Dearborn would quickly foul and two free throw misses by Lourdes gave the Wolverines a shot at the end, but Spala's three-pointer at the buzzer fell just short. Lourdes would hang on and win 49-46.

Sophomore Marisa Sauve had back-to-back double-doubles scoring 10 points and grabbing 12 rebounds Wednesday night while freshman Kendall Rose scored 9 points and had 6 rebounds. The women's basketball team will travel to Grand Rapids on Saturday to take on the Cornerstone Goldern Eagles at 1:00pm.
