Strong First Half Not Enough for Women's Basketball

Strong First Half Not Enough for Women's Basketball

Grand Rapids, MI - The women's basketball team was looking for their first win of the season Saturday against the Aquinas College Saints and early it was looking good. Michigan-Dearborn (0-17, 0-10) jumped out to an early 14-4 lead. Aquinas (5-12, 4-6) could only cut the deficit to nine points at the end of the first quarter 19-10. The Wolverines were able to extend their lead to 13 points in the second quarter, but the Saints were able to trim the deficit to six points heading into halftime. Sophomore Megan Swick led the charge for Michigan-Dearborn scoring 13 points in the first half.

In the second half, Aquinas came out shooting starting the half on a 16-4 run to take a six point lead just six minutes into the third quarter. Michigan-Dearborn freshman Natalie Spala kept the game close by scoring five consecutive points to pull the team within one point, but the Saints ended the quarter on a 12-3 run taking a 10 point lead into the final quarter. Injuries for Michigan-Dearborn caused them to use a shortened bench, but they kept fighting. Swick's three-pointer with just over two minutes left in the game pulled the Wolverines within six points, but Aquinas made their free throws down the stretch in winning 73-60. Swick finished with 22 points while freshman Kendall Rose had 12 points and 10 rebounds and sophomore Marisa Sauve added 12 points. The women's basketball team will play at Madonna on Wednesday at 5:30pm.
