Strong Second Half Powers Women's Basketball Over Marygrove

Detroit, MI - The women's basketball team made the short drive to Detroit to take on the Marygrove College Mustangs Saturday afternoon. After the game was tied at the end of the first quarter, the Wolverines outscored the Mustangs 55-26 in winning their first game of the season 69-40. Michigan-Dearborn (1-20, 1-13) held Marygrove (4-17, 1-13) to just 20% shooting for the game. The Wolverines also dominated on the boards outrebounding the Mustangs 63-41.

After Michigan-Dearborn built a 10 point early in the first quarter, Marygrove fought back to tie the game at 14 heading into the second quarter. The Wolverines would start the second quarter on a 10-0 run and maintained that lead into halftime. Freshman Natalie Spala led Michigan-Dearborn with 9 points in the first half.

In the third quarter the Wolverines were able to extend the lead to 17 points. Offensive rebounding was key as Michigan-Dearborn scored seven second chance points in the third quarter. As good as the Wolverines were in rebounding, defense sealed the win. Michigan-Dearborn held Marygrove to just three points in the fourth quarter. The Wolverines continued dominating the paint scoring 12 of their 15 fourth quarter points in the paint.

Sophomore Marisa Sauve dominated at both ends of the floor scoring 16 points and grabbing 17 rebounds, including 5 offensive rebounds. Three other Wolverines scored in double digits as sophomore Olivia Hauser scored 14 points and sophomore Megan Swick and Spala each scored 11 points. The women's basketball team will look to win two games in a row when they host Lourdes University on Wednesday at 5:30pm.
