FAST START GIVES NO. 1 CORNERSTONE WIN OVER MEN'S BASKETBALL

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The No. 23 University of Michigan-Dearborn men's basketball team went on the road to play No. 1 Cornerstone University in a Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference contest Wednesday night in Grand Rapids, Mich.

UM-Dearborn struggled early and was unable to close the gap after falling behind by 13 points just past the midway point of the first half.  Cornerstone then used a 9-0 run to end the first half, stretching the lead to 20 points. The Golden Eagles came away with a 70-57 victory to drop the Wolverines to 12-7 overall and 7-2 in the WHAC.

Junior Mafiaion Joyner (JR/Battle Creek, MI) came off the bench and put an impressive 19 points on the board. He shot 7-for-13 from the field highlighted by a 5-for-7 effort from long range. The Wolverines also received 11 points from senior Jason Penn (SR/Detroit, MI) while freshman Jason Gigliotti (FR/Hartland, MI) finished with nine points and seven rebounds.

The Wolverines shot 22-for-61 from the field (36.1 percent), made 8-of-22 from beyond the arc and 5-for-10 from the free-throw line.  Cornerstone outrebounded UM-Dearborn 37-30.

Leading the way for the Golden Eagles was reigning WHAC Player of the Year Kyle Steigenga who finished with an impressive 26 points. Steigenga shot 11-for-14 from the field and made 3-of-5 shots from beyond the three-point line. The Golden Eagles finished the night shooting 53.7 percent from the field (29-for-54) and 10-of-25 from long range.

The Wolverines will continue WHAC play this weekend as they take on Madonna University at 3 pm Saturday at MU Activity Center in Livonia, Mich.
