WOLVERINES WIN OT THRILLER OVER CARDINALS 80-77

DEARBORN, Mich. – In a game of runs, regulation ended in a tie in a Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference men's basketball game between the University of Michigan-Dearborn and Concordia University Saturday at the UM-Dearborn Fieldhouse.

The Wolverines trailed by three points with 1:46 left in the overtime period, but a 3-pointer by senior Gage Throgmorton (SR/White Lake, MI) tied the game at 74-74. After a technical foul by Concordia, UM-Dearborn hit four straight free throws to take a four-point lead. The Cardinals pulled to within a point but could not get a last second 3-pointer to drop and the Wolverines emerged with an 80-77 victory to improve to 10-4 overall and 7-1 in the WHAC.

At the half, UM-Dearborn trailed by 10 points after shooting 28 percent from the field. The Wolverines came out after the break with a renewed defensive effort, forcing several Cardinal turnovers to propel them on a 17-0 run to open the final 20 minutes.

After pulling in front by 13 with 7:13 in regulation, Concordia chipped away. Jalen Thompson hit two layups in the final 10 seconds to tie the game, setting up overtime.

The Wolverines were led by senior Ashton Curd (SR/Detroit, MI), who finished with 21 points, nine rebounds and four assists. Senior Jason Penn (SR/Detroit, MI) took over for stretches in the second half, closing the game with 18 points and 14 rebounds for a double-double. Junior Mafiaion Joyner (JR/Battle Creek, MI) came off the bench to score 12 points, including a critical 3-pointer in overtime.

The Wolverines shot 32-of-77 from the field, 4-of-20 from deep and 12-of-22 from the line, while outrebounding the Cardinals 45-39.

The Wolverines step out of conference for four straight games to end the calendar year, starting with NCAA Division II opponent Wayne State University at 7:30 pm Tuesday in Detroit, Mich.
