UM-Dearborn holds off (RV) Lourdes 12-11

SYLVANIA, Ohio - The University of Michigan-Dearborn men's lacrosse team remains in the thick of the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference postseason race after a critical win over (RV) Lourdes University Wednesday in Sylvania, Ohio.

The Wolverines jumped out to a 7-3 at the half, but the Gray Wolves tied the score heading to the fourth at 8-8. Hannibal Roda (SR/Harrison Township, Mich.) scored three times in the fourth quarter, including the final two goals to lead UM-Dearborn to the 12-11 win.

The victory moves UM-Dearborn to 6-7 overall and 3-3 in the WHAC. With one game remaining in the regular season, UM-Dearborn is tied for fourth place with Lawrence Tech in the WHAC standings. The Wolverines will need a victory over No. 3 Indiana Tech at home on Saturday and a loss by the Blue Devils. LTU holds the tiebreaker over the Wolverines due to a head-to-head win.

The first half against Lourdes was the Devon Callaghan (JR/Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) show, as the sophomore attackman scored five times before the break to push his team-leading goal total to 41 on the season.

After Colin DeWitt (FR/South Lyon, Mich.) scored his second of the game with under 10 minutes to play in the third for the Wolverines, Lourdes answered with four straight to tie the score heading to the final frame. Roda opened the fourth with his second of the game, and Justin Brodzik (JR/Canton, Mich.) gave UM-Dearborn a 10-8 lead less than two minutes later.

The Gray Wolves answered with three straight goals to take the lead for the first time since the opening goal of the game. Roda scored the final two, with the game winner coming on the man up on a feed from Brodzik.

Wolverine starting goalie Jon Chaffee (SO/Hartland, Mich.) made 11 saves, including a critical stop in the final minute to secure the win. Callaghan had a team-high 12 shots and four ground balls.

The Wolverines were outshot 37-30, while Lourdes also held an advantage in face offs 18-8 and ground balls 37-22.

The Wolverines close the regular season against No. 3 Indiana Tech on Senior Night for UM-Dearborn at 8 pm Saturday at the Detroit Country Day Fieldhouse in Beverly Hills, Mich.
