BEVERLY HILLS, Mich. - The University of Michigan-Dearborn men's lacrosse team won a back-and-forth thriller against Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference rival Aquinas College Wednesday at the Detroit Country Day Fieldhouse in Beverly Hills, Mich.
The Wolverines rallied from an early 4-1 deficit to tie the score at the half and built a 10-7 lead in the fourth. The No. 10 Saints scored three straight goals, including one as time expired to force overtime. Devon Callaghan (JR/Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) found the game winner just over a minute into the extra frame to clinch an 11-10 victory for the Wolverines.
The win pushes UM-Dearborn to 5-6 overall and 2-2 in the WHAC.
Down 4-1 entering the second quarter, the Wolverines got two-straight goals from Adam Ranck (FR/West Bloomfield, Mich.) followed by a tally from Hannibal Roda (SR/Harrison Township, Mich.) with 1:14 left before the break to tie the score.
Roda scored two more in the third, followed by another for Ranck and Callaghan's first of the game to give UM-Dearborn an 8-7 lead after three quarters. Goals from Colin DeWitt (FR/South Lyon, Mich.) and Mitchell Stapleton (SR/Detroit, Mich.) in the fourth pushed the lead to three.
The Aquinas comeback to force overtime was capped by a goal from Walker West as regulation expired.
Chad Reynolds (FR/South Elgin, Ill.) won the overtime face off, giving UM-Dearborn the possession. After a Wolverine timeout, Callaghan took advantage, driving to the net and putting the game away with his second goal of the night.
Jon Chaffee (SO/Hartland, Mich.) got the win in net for the Wolverines making seven saves.
UM-Dearborn narrowly outshot Aquinas 33-32, while controlling the ground balls 29-22. The Saints won 13-of-22 face offs.
The Wolverines travel to No. 2 Madonna University at 2 pm Saturday in Livonia, Mich.
