Wolverines capture opening night win over DIII Hornets

BEVERLY HILLS, Mich. - The University of Michigan-Dearborn men's lacrosse team opened the 2018 season, topping NCAA Division III foe Kalamazoo College Saturday at the Detroit Country Day Field House in Beverly Hills, Mich.

The Wolverines got four goals from newcomer Adam Ranck (FR/West Bloomfield, Mich.) and three more from returning leading scorer Devon Callaghan (JR/Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) to top the Hornets 13-11, as UM-Dearborn opens the season 1-0.

After a low-scoring first half, that saw the Wolverines lead 4-2 at the break, the offense got going for both teams in the second half. Kalamazoo outscored the Wolverines 6-3 in the third to take an 8-7 lead, but UM-Dearborn rebounded.

Ranck and Callaghan each scored two goals in the final 15 minutes to push UM-Dearborn to the win. Ranck's highlight came when he intercepted a pass 40 yards from the Hornet net. He caught the Kalamazoo goalie out of position and fired the ball into the net.

Callaghan recorded a brilliant goal later in the period, as he dodged a Hornet defender to the ground and went over his shoulder to beat the Kalamazoo goalie for his third of the night.

Ben Phillips (SO/Plymouth, Mich.) and Matthew Rosteck (SR/Commerce Township, Mich.) each added two goals, while Mitchell Stapleton (SR/Detroit, Mich.) and Justin Brodzik (JR/Canton, Mich.) each scored one. Liam Turner (SO/Ann Arbor, Mich.) got the start in net, making four saves in the first half. The win went to Jon Chaffee (SO/Hartland, Mich.), with four saves in the second half.

Matthew Daratony (SR/Hartland, Mich.) recorded a team-high five ground balls, while Nolan Landis (JR/Northville, Mich.) and Chad Reynolds (FR/South Elgin, Ill.) each added four. Reynolds had a team-high two assists.

The Wolverines return to action next weekend, traveling to Union College at 2 pm Feb 24 in Barbourville, Ky.
