Wolverines drop finale at Sault 6-5

SAULT STE. MARIE, Ont. – The University of Michigan-Dearborn women's ice hockey team fell to Sault College in the series finale Monday afternoon in Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.

Down 3-1, the No. 2 (West Region) Wolverines scored three unanswered to take a one-goal lead into the second intermission. Sault College pushed backed scoring three times in the final frame to defeat UM-Dearborn 6-5.

The Wolverines had the edge in shots, 50-36. The loss is the first for the team to an ACHA DII program and drops UM-Dearborn to 13-2-0 overall this season.

Reigning UM-Dearborn Player of the Week Claudia Maguire picked up where she left off the night before by opening the scoring eight minutes into the first. The Cougars responded with two goals in the final three minutes to take a 2-1 lead into the intermission. Sault College extended its lead to two at the 1:37 of the second.

The Wolverine offense scored three times in under six minutes in the second. Maguire added her second of the game with assists going to Kim Primeau and Odisoula Argyris. Brooke Spiegel tied the game as she scored on the power play from Lexi Garbacik and Argyris. Maguire completed her second hat trick of the weekend with assists going to Kaylee Keledijan and Primeau midway through the second.

However, the Cougars struck three times in under three minutes in the final frame, taking a two-goal lead. Primeau added a goal shortly after from Madison Ryszewski and Maguire.

Tara Peladeau got the start in goal the Wolverines, while Victoria Hahn relieved her halfway through the third period. Full goaltender stats were not provided.

UM-Dearborn returns to action against Concordia University at 7 pm on Friday at the UM-Dearborn Ice Arena.
