Wolverines Win a Pair on Opening Weekend

Palo Heights, Ill.-- The University of Michigan-Dearborn (2-2) volleyball team opened their 2022 season in the Windy City at the TIU/TCC Tournament Tussle. The Wolverines won a pair of matches during their four-game weekend slate. Brooke Wetherill had an efficient weekend putting down 21 balls and swinging .340.


Match One vs. Judson (20-25, 22-25,18-25)

In their season opener, the Wolverines took on a formidable competitor in the Judson Eagles (2-1). The Eagles took advantage of early mistakes from the Wolverines and made them pay. The Maize & Blue made 25 attack errors and 12 service errors as they needed to work through some opening jitters on Friday (Aug 26). Syndey Eggleton led both teams with 13 kills and led the match with 13.5 points. Regan Rose distributed 25 assists while compiling three aces to her total. Eggleton, Rose, and Kenzie Mertz had seven digs a piece to lead the way for the Wolverines.

 

Match Two vs. Webber International (25-20, 25-23, 17-25, 25-14)

In their second match on Friday, the Wolverines got into a groove. UM-Dearborn took down Webber International (0-4) in four sets to give themselves their first win of 2022. Rose was phenomenal for the Wolverines playing great defense and distributing the ball effectively to the Wolverine attack. Rose compiled 33 assists and 20 digs and was a critical factor in clutch scoring runs to give the Wolverines the four-set victory. Eggleton led the way with 14 kills and added two aces, While Mertz led the contest with 21 digs. Brooke Wetherill was efficient in her attack as she put down nine kills and swung an impressive .368 in 19 chances. Wetherill also shut down the Warrior attack as she had three solo and three assisted blocks.

 

Match Three vs. Ohio Christian (16-25, 25-21, 25-19, 25-15)

The Maize & Blue continued their momentum from Friday into their first match on Saturday (Aug 26). The Wolverines took down Ohio Christian (0-5) in four sets to improve to 2-1 on the weekend. Regan Sliwinski was dominant, doing a little bit of everything in the match. Sliwinski led the Wolverines with 13 kills on 22 chances. She stuffed the OCU attack seven times on the defensive end while also leading the Wolverines with three aces. Rose was effective again, dishing out 39 assists and stuffed the Warriors five times at the net. Eggleton and Wetherill each had nine kills, while Mertz led the contest with 21 digs. 

 

Match Four vs. Trinity International (15-25, 15-25, 20-25)

The Wolverines sputtered in their fourth match of the long weekend. The Wolverines dropped a three-set match to a strong competitor in Trinity International (5-1). The Trojans ousted the Wolverine's momentum coming off consecutive victories. The Trojans limited the Wolverine attack to 15 points in the first two sets, with only one Wolverine having more than five kills.
