Wolverines Outlast Penn State Schuylkill in First of Two Games

DETROIT, Mich. – The University of Michigan-Dearborn (3-12) women's basketball team played their first of two games against Penn State Schuylkill (8-5) on Monday (Dec. 19). India Grissom led the way with 10 points in a 60-54 victory inside the Matthaei Center. 

 

UM-Dearborn Leaders

Grissom shot 4-of-10 from the field and connected on two triples to help her finish with 10 points. The Wolverines had a balanced attack and only saw one player eclipse double figures but had 11 players contribute points. Lily Miller had a team-high eight rebounds in the win. Dearborn connected on eight three-pointers to help propel the team to victory. 

 

Penn State Schuylkill Leaders

Serena Jones had a game-high 17 points for Schuylkill. Kassidy Ingram recorded a double-double in the loss scoring 14 points and collecting 14 rebounds. Schuylkill outrebounded the Wolverines 50-45 and had a better field goal percentage shooting 34.8% from the floor. 

 

Inside the Game

Schuylkill jumped out to an early 6-0 lead before Grissom would settle down the Wolverines with her first bucket of the game as she attacked the rim with a right-handed layin with 7:38 remaining in the opening period. Dearborn would score the game's following nine points, capped off by a Lily Miller layup to make it 11-6. Schuylkill would tie the game up at 14 before the buzzer would sound in the first period. 

 

Schuylkill took a four-point lead in the first three minutes of the second quarter before Sara Malak hit three of her own to make it 19-18. The Schuylkill lead would creep back up four points before Head Coach Brooke Bowers called a timeout to collect her team. That would prove to be a notable move as the Wolverines finished the half on a 14-4 run and took a 35-29 lead heading into the half. 

 

Schuylkill would get to within two points in the opening minutes of the second half, but Matalina Ochoa showed her veteran poise to stop the run and extend the lead to four. Schuylkill would tie the game up at 38 before Abby Fullerton drilled a deep three to make it 41-38 at the 4:49 mark of the third quarter. The Barrage of threes continued as Elzien Zomer connected on a three with 1:58 left in the quarter to give Dearborn a 45-41 lead. Dearborn would maintain a 46-44 lead heading into the final quarter. 

 

Grissom hit a clutch three on the first possession of the fourth quarter to give Dearborn a 49-44 lead. With 1:31 left and just a three-point lead, Brooklyn Taylor drilled the night's biggest shot on a right-wing three to put the game to bed and give Dearborn a 56-50 lead. Siena Smith hit two free throws down the stretch to make it a 60-54 final.

Dearborn wraps up the mini-series with Schuylkill on Tuesday (Dec. 19) at the Crisler Center in Ann Arbor, Mich. Tip-off is set for 11 am.
