Grissom Scores 16, Wolverines Fall Against Mount Vernon Nazarene

DETROIT, Mich. – The University of Michigan-Dearborn (1-3) women's basketball team was outlasted against Mount Vernon Nazarene (1-1) on Thursday (Nov. 3) inside the Matthaei Center at Wayne State University. The Wolverines kept it close thanks to 17 points from Siena Smith and 16 points from India Grissom

 

UM-Dearborn Leaders

Smith led the Wolverines with 17 points on 7-of-15 shooting. Grissom had her best game in her young career, shooting 5-of-10 from the field and 2-4 from behind the arc to end with 16. Smith led the Wolverines with five rebounds. Dearborn shot 43.8% (7-of-16) from behind the arc and 46.2% (30-65) from the field. 

 

MVN Leaders

Peyton Davis and Angela Roshak had a game-high 21 points. Roshak finished with a double-double as she hauled in a game-high 10 rebounds. Maggie Coe chipped in 14 points, while Emily Walker dished out a game-high seven assists. 

 

Inside the Game

Both teams traded baskets in the first five minutes of the contest before MVN took a 12-9 lead after a pair of Sage Brannon free throws. That score held for the next 90 seconds before Dearborn ripped off a pair of baskets on consecutive possessions from Grissom and Matalina Ochoa. Dearborn led 13-12 with 2:37 to play in the opening quarter. MVN would try to run away, taking a 19-14 lead with 34 seconds left. However, Dearborn would close the quarter on 4-0 run to trail by one after one. 

 

MVN would take a 10-point lead in the second quarter due to seven Dearborn turnovers.  

Dearborn would trim that lead to four thanks in part to a Grissom triple and an Ochoa layup to beat the buzzer before the half. 

 

Dearborn took a 48-46 lead in the third after consecutive threes from Abby Fullerton with 6:28 to play. MVN would go on a 10-2 run over the next two minutes to take a 56-48 lead with 4:43 to play in the third. After three, MVN carried a seven-point lead with one quarter remaining. 

 

MVN took complete control of the final quarter outscoring the Wolverines 29-16 to take a 95-75 victory.
