DEARBORN, Mich. - The University of Michigan-Dearborn women's basketball team improved from a year ago, completing the 2016-17 season, the first under head coach Jordan Sweeney, with five more wins than the year prior, including impressive showings against some of the top teams in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference.

The WHAC postseason awards were released on Wednesday, with five Wolverines picking up honors.

The on-court success of the Wolverines in 2016-17 was bolstered by the play of freshman forward Jeorgia Jones (FR/Detroit, MI), who showed moments of her potential to take over games on the offensive end. For her efforts, Jones was named to the WHAC All-Freshman Team, it was announced Wednesday.

Jones finished the year averaging 9.1 points per game, tied for the team lead with Emily Heinrich (SO/South Lyon, MI). Jones also pulled down 3.8 rebounds per game, while playing in all 30 games for the Wolverines, showing versatility and an ability to play several roles. Jones scored a season-high 20 points at home against Lawrence Tech, while hitting a personal best 10 field goals.

UM-Dearborn saw three student-athletes named to the WHAC All-Academic Team, including Heinrich, Megan Swick (JR/Grosse Ile, Mich.) and Meredith Williams (JR/Novi, Mich.). To be named to the WHAC All-Academic Team a student-athlete must maintain a minimum GPA of 3.25, be at least a junior in academic standing and have been at UM-Dearborn for at least one full year.

Junior Lauron Sanders (JR/Rochester, MI) was named the UM-Dearborn representative on the WHAC Champions of Character Team.
