Wolverine women pull away late for 86-72 win over Marygrove

DEARBORN, Mich. - The University of Michigan-Dearborn women's basketball team snapped a four-game skid with a strong offensive performance against Marygrove College in a Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference contest Saturday at the UM-Dearborn Fieldhouse.

The Wolverines pulled away late with hustle plays and strong inside shooting to capture an 86-72 victory, which moves UM-Dearborn to 6-20 overall and 3-15 in the WHAC this season.

Marygrove shot lights out from deep throughout the game especially in the first half, where the Mustangs hit nine shots from deep. The Wolverines kept pace and held a narrow two-point lead at the break. The game remained close though most of the third quarter, but UM-Dearborn slowly pulled away on the strength of four starters finishing in double figures.

UM-Dearborn outscored Marygrove 25-18 in the final quarter, led by Kendall Rose (SO/Canton, MI), who scored seven of her team-high 17 points in the final frame. Rose finished 4-of-10 from the field and 8-of-10 from the free-throw line, while adding seven rebounds and five assists.

Megan Swick (JR/Grosse Ile, Mich.) hit three of her five 3-pointers in the first quarter, helping the Wolverines keep pace. She finished with 15 points on 5-of-9 shooting. Natalie Spala (SO/Livonia, MI) finished with 14 points and five rebounds, while Jeorgia Jones (FR/Detroit, MI) added 11 points. Jaida Futch (FR/Dearborn Heights MI) and Emily Heinrich (SO/South Lyon, MI) each came off the bench to score nine points for the Wolverines.

UM-Dearborn shot 30-of-66 from the field, 10-of-20 from deep and 16-of-23 from the line, while adding 19 assists and 16 turnovers.

Elisha Major put on a show from deep for the Mustangs, hitting six 3-pointers and pouring in a game-high 30 points, while Leija Masinovic added 16 points off the bench. Marygrove shot 24-of-55 from the field, 13-of-26 from behind the 3-point line and 11-of-21 on free throws.

The Wolverines hit the road for their final two road games of the year starting at Cornerstone University at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday in Grand Rapids, Mich.
