Cornerstone holds off UM-Dearborn women 70-61

DEARBORN, Mich. - The University of Michigan-Dearborn women's basketball team continues to push the top teams in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference, but could not outlast Cornerstone University in the first game of 2017 Wednesday at the UM-Dearborn Fieldhouse.

The Wolverines saw Cornerstone go on a 15-4 run to close the first quarter, which erased an early advantage for the home team. The Golden Eagles allowed UM-Dearborn to cut the lead to seven late, but the Wolverines were unable to get any closer, falling 70-61. The loss drops UM-Dearborn to 4-14 overall and 1-9 in the WHAC.

After a hot start to the game, the Wolverine shooting cooled off, as the team finished 38.7 percent from the field. Kendall Rose (SO/Canton, MI) recorded a team-high 14 points, including three 3-pointers. She added seven rebounds, six assists, and two steals.

Emily Heinrich (SO/South Lyon, MI) added 13 points, while Natalie Spala (SO/Livonia, MI) narrowly missed a double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds to go along with four assists. Jeorgia Jones (FR/Detroit MI) came off the bench to score six points and grab six rebounds, while Micah White (SO/Harper Woods, MI) added five points, including a 3-pointer.

The Wolverines shot 24-of-62 from the field, 6-of-27 from deep and 7-of-11 from the free-throw line. UM-Dearborn was efficient on offense with 17 assists compared to 11 turnovers.

The Golden Eagles got a game-high 17 points from Jesse Sheridan, while Shaina DenBesten came off the bench to add 11 points. Cornerstone shot 24-of-55 from the field, 5-of-10 from behind the 3-point line and made 17-of-27 free throws, while winning the rebounding battle 36-32.

The Wolverines continue WHAC play against Madonna University at 1 p.m. Saturday at the UM-Dearborn Fieldhouse.
