Wolverines rally for OT, fall short to SHU

DEARBORN, Mich. - The University of Michigan-Dearborn women's basketball team trailed Siena Heights University by eight points with 3:30 to play, but the Wolverines evened the score with five seconds left in a Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference matchup Saturday at the Fieldhouse in Dearborn, Mich.

With the seconds ticking off the fourth-quarter clock, Meredith Williams (JR/Novi, Mich.) came away with a steal and raced dwon the court looking for the game winner. After the ball got loose from Williams, Kendall Rose (SO/Canton, MI) picked it up at the elbow and fired a jump shot just off the iron, sending the game to an extra frame. The Saints scored the first seven points of overtime to take the game by a final of 67-59. The loss drops UM-Dearborn to 3-10 overall and 0-5 in the WHAC.

The game was played in tribute to Angie Sauve, mother of UM-Dearborn women's basketball player Marisa Sauve (JR/Dearborn, MI). Angie was recently diagnosed with cancer. The Wolverines wore purple warm up shirts and sold wristbands to raise funds to help support her fight during this difficult time.

The Wolverines were led by Rose, who scored a game-high 17 points, including making 7-of-8 free throws. Rose narrowly missed a double-double, pulling down nine rebounds, while adding two blocks and a steal. Emily Heinrich (SO/South Lyon, MI) added 13 points and nine rebounds, while Jeorgia Jones (FR/Detroit MI) came off the bench to score 10 points. Natalie Spala (SO/Livonia, MI) scored several big buckets late, finishing with eight points, while Arryn Dochenetz (SO/Livonia, MI) added seven.

UM-Dearborn shot 21-of-63 from the field, 3-of-17 from deep and 14-of-18 from the line. The Wolverines were outrebounded 42-29, finishing with 12 assists and 15 turnovers.

The Saints got a team-high 14 points from April Watson and Sharmaine Wills. Watson and Wills each had a double-double, grabbing 10 and 15 rebounds, respectively.

The Wolverines hit the road for three straight WHAC road games starting with Lawrence Tech University at 6 p.m. Saturday in Southfield, Mich.
