West Tallies Five Points in Opening Game At World Cup of Hockey

Cârța, Romania – University of Michigan-Dearborn men's ice hockey's Brendan West kicked off the World Cup of University Hockey with a bang as he had a breakout game for Team USA in an 11-1 victory over Team Sweden on Friday (Apr. 14).

Team USA established the pace of the game early on as they raced out to a 2-0 lead just five minutes into the contest. West tallied his first point of the tournament when he set up Brody Selman (University of Arizona) for Team USA's second goal. West added his second assist of the period when Team USA made it 5-0 with 43 seconds left. Finally, West set up Jason Foltz (Liberty University) for a one-timer as the clock was winding down.

West tallied his third assist of the game early in the second period as he provided the secondary assist on Selman's third goal. Two minutes later, Team USA sent their powerplay unit onto the ice after Sweden was called for slashing. Again, West worked himself down below the left hash mark, and this time Selman sent a saucer pass to the tape of West, who wristed it past the Swedish netminder for his first goal and a 7-0 lead for Team USA.

With a 9-1 lead and 10 minutes left in the third period, West would tickle the twine off a Selman assist in making it 10-1 Team USA.

West finished the contest +5 and tied for the team lead with five points (2 goals, 3 assists).

West and Team USA are back in action on Saturday (Apr.14) as they square off against Team Hungary at 9:30 am.
