UM-Dearborn opens season with three road games

DEARBORN, Mich. – The University of Michigan-Dearborn women's basketball team opened the 2021-22 season with three non-conference road games this week, traveling to Mount Vernon, Ohio to take on Mount Vernon Nazarene and participating in the 2021 Rich and Mira Panella Stritch Classic by taking on Cardinal Stritch and Indiana Northwest.

On Tuesday (10/26), the Wolverines found themselves facing a double-digit deficit at the half. The UM-Dearborn offense would continue to struggle in the second half as the Cougars would find their stride, cruising to a 105-57 win over the Wolverines.

Leading UM-Dearborn was Maya Barakat and India Grissom, both finishing with 10 points. Ro'Zhane Wells and Cydney Williams would both add eight rebounds. Leading the Mount Vernon was Maggie Coe with a game-high 22 points, while Rylee Pireu would add 16 of her own.

On Friday (10/29), the Wolverines would take on the Cardinal Stritch Wolves in the first game of the Rich and Mira Panella Stritch Classic in Milwaukee, Wis.  

UM-Dearborn found themselves up by five after the first quarter. However, the Wolverine offense would stall the remainder of the game, as the Wolves would pull away in the fourth quarter, winning 47-33.

Leading UM-Dearborn was Mariah Taylor with 11 points, while Barakat would add six point and a game-high 14 rebounds. 

Leading Cardinal Stritch was Natalie Tomaszewski with 16 points and 11 rebounds, while Timeah Stotts added seven points and 10 rebounds.

On Saturday (10/30), the Wolverines would compete in the second game of the Rich and Mira Panella Stritch Classic, taking on the Indiana Northwest Red Hawks. UM-Dearborn would take a one point lead into the half, however the Wolverines would come out of the break ice-cold, allowing Indiana Northwest to pull away in the third quarter on its way to a 61-43 win. UM-Dearborn opens the season 0-3 after the first week of play.

Leading the Wolverines was Wells with 11 points and seven rebounds, while Abby Fullerton add eight points of her own.

The Wolverines return to action taking part in the First Bank Richmond Classic against Indiana Southeast (@4pm 11/5) and Indiana East (@5pm 11/6) in Richmond, Ind. UM-Dearborn will return home to open the 2021-22 WHAC portion of the schedule, hosting the Rochester University Warriors at 5pm, Wednesday November 10th at Henry Ford College in Dearborn, Mich.
