So Close but So Far

Dearborn, MI- Michigan Dearborn fell two points short (65-66) of taking the conference win against Siena Heights University this past Saturday. The leaders of the game went back and forth as the score was tied three different times and the lead changed ten times. Both teams shot 40.7% from the field but the Saints took control from the free throw line. Siena outscored the Wolverines in the first half but when Michigan returned from the half they managed to outscore the Saints. Dearborn did not joke around when it came to rebounding; they only needed five more rebounds to double Siena's total rebounds. Jamiel Strickland led the Wolverines with 22 pts while Jason Penn contributed 5pts and 10 rebounds.

It didn't take long for Siena Heights to take the lead getting the first shot of the game as well as the offensive rebound for a second chance. Michigan was down by 4pts until Gage Throgmorton made a three pointer 2:30 into the game. Cogan (Saints) answered back with 2pts off of a fast break to really get him and his team going. The Saints took control of the half and continued to enlarge the gap. With six minutes left in the half Michigan found themselves chasing by 13pts, but decided to put pressure and play strong defense for the rest of the half. Dearborn worked hard and brought that 13pt gap down to 5pts for the 38- 43 half. Strickland had gone 5/7 from the field as Brandon Kennedy was 2/3 from behind the arc.

After fighting in the first half to close the gap, Michigan allowed Siena to gain another 11pt lead. However, 11pts was enough for the Wolverines and it was time for them to play their game and fight back. 7:19 on the clock, Paul Standtke made a free throw to tie the game at 53. Standtke made another shot from the paint to give the Wolverines their first lead of the game. The game went on tied 2 other times and the lead changed 9 more times. Michigan Dearborn had a 1pt lead until Goodman (SHU) made a shot from the paint with two seconds left in the game. The Wolverines were unable to get the last shot which lead to a 65-66 loss for Michigan Dearborn.

Men's Basketball will play this Wednesday, February 4th against Aquinas at 7:30 pm with the home court advantage.
