Men's Basketball Shoots Its Way to Victory

Dearborn, MI - Shooting woes have plagued the men's basketball team early this season, however, it was shooting that got the team their third win in four games on Saturday afternoon. The Wolverines knocked off conference foe Marygrove College 86-81 behind strong shooting, 53% for the game, by far the team's best shooting performance of the season. Michigan-Dearborn (4-8, 2-4) also shot 43% from behind the three-point arc and held Marygrove (1-9, 0-6) to 43% shooting from the field for the game.

After building a seven point lead early in the game, the Wolverines saw Marygrove fight back to take the lead just before the mid-point of the first half. Michigan-Dearborn would then go on a 12-2 run in which five different players would score during the run. Back-to-back three point baskets by Marygrove's Kenneth Miller cut the lead to three points. After another Marygrove three-pointer, this time by Darryll Dixon, gave the Mustangs a two point lead. Sophomore Brandon Cole made a three-pointer of his own late in the half to give the Wolverines a 41-40 halftime lead.

In the second half, the Wolverines fell behind early but a Marygrove turnover led to a Jason Penn basket giving Michigan-Dearborn the lead. The momentum quickly changed around the halfway point of the second half as Marygrove built a seven point lead with just under eight minutes to play. Cole would again be the catalyst scoring seven points down the stretch while senior Jamiel Strickland made four free throws down the stretch to seal the 86-81 victory for the home team. Penn led the Wolverines with 21 points while Cole added 19 points. Junior Paul Standtke had a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds.

The men's basketball team will head on the road to play Great Lakes Christian College on Tuesday, December 9 at 7:00pm.
