Big Second Half Powers Men's Basketball to Victory

Dearborn, MI - On Tuesday night, the men's basketball team started strong against Grace Bible College, and then let the lead and the game slip away. On Wednesday night, the roles were reversed. Playing on back-to-back nights, against an opponent, Rochester College, who beat them just two weeks ago, Michigan-Dearborn (1-4) fell behind by as many as 16 points in the first half. During the first half, Rochester College (4-3) shot 46% and made all four free throw attempts in gaining a 34-24 lead.

As the Wolverines found out Tuesday night, basketball is a game of two halves. After trailing by 14 points early in the second half, the Wolverines went on a 10-0 run capped by junior Victor Mattison's back-to-back three pointers. Michigan-Dearborn would cut the lead to three, but Rochester built it back up to eight points just before the halfway mark of the second half. Again the three-pointer would be the catalyst as junior Darryl Mobley Jr. and sophomore Gage Throgmorton would each hit one pulling the Wolverines within two points with just under nine minutes to play. The game would be tied at three different points late in the game with the last tie at the four minute mark. After that sopohmore Brandon Cole would get an offensive rebound and get the put back giving Michiga-Dearborn a lead that they would not relinquish. Cole would then sink two free throws on the next possession to extend the lead. After a Rochester basket, Cole hit a three-pointer scoring seven consecutive points for the home team. Mobley Jr. would put the game away with a three-pointer with 40 seconds left. When the horn sounded the men's basketball team won 65-55 giving the team their first win of the season and giving Head Coach Taylor Langley his first collegiate win as a head coach.

Mobley Jr. led the Wolverines with 19 points while senior Jamiel Strickland added 16 points going for 7-10 from the field. Cole ended up one rebound short of a double-double scoring 11 points and grabbing 9 rebounds. The men's basketball team will kick off WHAC play Saturday on the road against Lourdes University at 3:00pm.
