Men's Basketball Falls by One

Dearborn, MI- The men's basketball team works hard but is one shot shy of taking the win (58-59) over Concordia University. Although the Wolverines had a lower total field goal percentage of 37.7% than Concordia with 41.2%, they outshot the cardinals from behind the three point line. This competition was a very back and forth game. Both teams switched who had the lead five different times and the score was tied six different times. The Wolverines tied the score five of six times but only failed to take the lead two of the times. Dearborn boxed out and crashed the boards hard, giving them 17 more rebounds than Concordia's game total of 26. Jason Penn lead the Wolverines with 20 points and 11 rebounds as Paul Strandtke shot 4/6 from the free throw line and lead the team with 5 assists.

Michigan Dearborn bust open the first half with putting eight points on the board and holding Concordia to zero for the first four minutes. Alec Turner from Concordia was the first to but a stop on the Wolverines run by shooting a three pointer and making it. With some time in between at 14:28 Turner made a second three pointer to take the game to a four point difference. The wolverine, Paul Standtke answered back by putting two points on the board which started a small run. The small run turned into a 12 point lead with 8:17 to go in the first half. Dearborn left the first half (23-25) trailing by two. For Dearborn, Brandon Cole lead the team with eight points and eight rebounds, as a team shot 6/8 from the free throw line and had 28 rebounds.

During the second half the Wolverines spent most of the time trying to catch up and tie the game. With 8:53 left in the game, Concordia had their largest lead of 10 points. Michigan was able to bounce back from these deficits and tie the game four different times. However, they were only able to take the lead two different times. Dearborn was losing by one until Jamiel Strickland made a three pointer with 48 seconds left in the game, putting the wolverines ahead by two. Andrew Patrick from Concordia made a three pointer with 24 seconds left in the game, putting Dearborn down by one. The wolverines took a full time out to try and get one last shot. The shot was missed and Concordia made the defensive rebound to secure the (58-59) win.

The Wolverines will next compete at Aquinas College on Wednesday, January 7 at 8:00pm.
